Some of my former professors and peers are going to smile when they see this photo.

As it turns out, the concepts of operational and campaign planning used for military decision making are great tools for strategic planning in municipal settings, too!

The City of Newport, Rhode Island, is MOVING OUT on its Council’s 2024 Strategic Plan. Tonight, our five output area champions and their teams met for a kickoff meeting with some pizza and a primer on things like problem framing, constraints and restraints, initial conditions and desired end states, lines of effort, and yes, even center of gravity analysis.

There are many frameworks for planning. This is “a” way, but there is no wrong way. The larger objective was to spend some time thinking about how we think.

I’m proud of these teams and I look forward to what they’re going to brainstorm and create!
