Aquidneck Island $19 million Grant

Original Post from July 2026

Securing funding requires initiative, and collaboration amplifies our efforts. Today, Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth proudly celebrated the receipt of a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) federal grant totaling over $19 million. This grant is part of the national "Vision Zero" initiative, which aims to implement essential traffic safety measures and enhance bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure across Aquidneck Island.

We extend our gratitude to our federal Congressional delegation, including Sen. Jack Reed, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, and Rep. Gabe Amo, for their support. I also want to acknowledge the City Council of Newport, under the leadership of Chair Charlie Holder, along with our partner Councils on the island and my fellow Chief Administrative Officers, Shawn Brown from Middletown and Rich Rainer from Portsmouth.

A special thank you goes to Mr. Peter Bramante, Newport's Grants Officer, for leading the Grant Agreement process with the United States Department of Transportation and coordinating today's media availability.
